Together, they have eliminated over 108 million plastic items and packaging in 2020, totaling around 804 metric tons.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili<\/strong> said:<em> \u201cIn just one year, the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative has made a real impact. Together, signatories have cut their use of plastic by 800 metric tons, equivalent to 27 large shipping containers full of plastic. I congratulate all those businesses and destinations for their commitment and welcome the 21 newest signatories to the Initiative \u2013 a clear sign that tourism is working hard to become more sustainable, even in times of crisis.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"article-title\">Signatories report plastics progress<\/h2>\n<p><strong>deSter,<\/strong>&nbsp;a member of gategroup and the leading supplier to the aviation, hospitality and foodservice industries has also reported progress, for instance by discontinuing the launch of new products with non-recyclable materials; working on fiber-based technologies and closed-loop recycling pilots with customers; and developing new designs.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe are delighted to have joined the Global Tourism Plastic Initiative through our Bye Bye Plastics program: Club Med has already removed on a global scale disposable plastic items such as cups, straws, cutlery, plates as well as individual plastic packaging from shower gel, shampoo and lotion and from other in-room accessories. We are now aiming to remove single-use plastic accessories from our rooms and festive events as well as reducing by up to 50% the use of plastic water bottles in 2024 (compared to 2019),\u201d<\/em> said <strong>Florian Duprat, Sustainability manager at Club Med.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe are pleased to have been able to formalize our goals and progress in the global commitment of the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative report. It gives us the opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to developing more sustainable solutions. And, more importantly, by being part of a coordinated action plan with other signatories, we can be sure that we are moving the needle to stop plastic pollution,\u201d<\/em> said <strong>Philippe De Naeyer, Director Sustainability at deSter.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneplanetnetwork.org\/programmes\/sustainable-tourism\/global-tourism-plastics-initiative\/progress-report-2021\">full report is available online<\/a>&nbsp;and is also linked to the annual report of the <strong>New Plastics Economy Global Commitment<\/strong> led by the <strong>Ellen MacArthur Foundation<\/strong>, providing its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/emf.thirdlight.com\/link\/n1ipti7a089d-ekf9l1\/@\/preview\/1?o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tourism chapter (see page 12) (see page 12)<\/a>.&nbsp;A broader reporting mechanism that would allow additional stakeholders that are signatories (e.g. SMEs) to report progress on the implementation of their commitments will also soon be made available.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"article-title\">More sector-wide commitment<\/h2>\n<p>Since the last announcement of signatories in July 2021, the <strong>Global Tourism Plastics Initiative<\/strong> has officially welcomed&nbsp;<strong>21 new signatories<\/strong>&nbsp;bringing the total of organizations that have committed to implement circular economy of plastics in the tourism sector to 113.<\/p>\n<p>Among the 21 new signatories, the Initiative welcomes 4 accommodation companies (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneplanetnetwork.org\/organisations\/alila-villas-uluwatu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Alila Villas Uluwatu<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneplanetnetwork.org\/organisations\/jjs-hostel-mirissa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">JJ\u2019s Hostel Mirissa<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneplanetnetwork.org\/organisations\/phaea-resorts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Phaea Resorts<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneplanetnetwork.org\/organisations\/sudima-hotels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sudima Hotels<\/a>), 7 tour operators (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneplanetnetwork.org\/organisations\/adventuretects-llc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Adventuretects LLC<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneplanetnetwork.org\/organisations\/europamundo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Europamundo<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneplanetnetwork.org\/organisations\/evaneos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Evaneos<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneplanetnetwork.org\/organisations\/secret-scotland-tours\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Secret Scotland Tours<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneplanetnetwork.org\/organisations\/see-turtles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">SEE Turtles<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneplanetnetwork.org\/organisations\/travelbhutan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Travel.Bhutan<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneplanetnetwork.org\/organisations\/turama-pacific-travel-group\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Turama Pacific Travel Group<\/a>), 9 supporting organizations (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneplanetnetwork.org\/organisations\/arcenciel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">arcenciel<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneplanetnetwork.org\/organisations\/blue-community\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Blue Community<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneplanetnetwork.org\/organisations\/clewat-ltd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Clewat Ltd<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/esdo.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Environment and Social Development Organization-ESDO<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneplanetnetwork.org\/organisations\/jaya-house-river-park-siem-reap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jaya House River Park Siem Reap<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneplanetnetwork.org\/organisations\/lombok-tourism-polytechnic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Lombok Tourism Polytechnic<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneplanetnetwork.org\/organisations\/natufagus-tourism-consulting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Natufagus Consulting<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneplanetnetwork.org\/organisations\/union-international-mountain-leader-associations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Union of International Mountain Leader Associations (UIMLA)<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneplanetnetwork.org\/organisations\/worldwide-association-diving-instructors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Worldwide Association of Diving Instructors<\/a>) and 1 destination (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneplanetnetwork.org\/organisations\/azerbaijan-tourism-board\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Azerbaijan Tourism Board (ATB)<\/a>). These signatories have&nbsp;set concrete targets around the elimination of unnecessary and problematic plastics, the introduction of reuse models and work on value chain level to improve recyclability.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"article-title\">A common goal for tourism<\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>Global Tourism Plastics Initiative<\/strong> unites the tourism sector behind a common vision to address the root causes of plastic pollution. It is led by the <strong>United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)<\/strong> and the <strong>World Tourism Organization in collaboration<\/strong> with the<strong> Ellen MacArthur Foundation<\/strong>.
