The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/together4forests.eu\/about\/about-together4forests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#Together4Forests coalition<\/a>&nbsp;of environmental organisations behind the protests is calling on national governments to curb the EU\u2019s contribution to forest and ecosystem destruction, and human rights violations around the world, ahead of a meeting of environment ministers in Brussels next month to discuss the new law.<\/p>\n<p>From Sweden to Romania, activists&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/drive\/folders\/1zFsyIdRfz6IxQiLTEsOZ1H5zXxRZDihi?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">took aerial photos<\/a>&nbsp;to show how quickly the world\u2019s forests are disappearing \u2013 an area the size of a football pitch every two seconds \u2013 partly due to European consumption of products from the cleared areas. Activists are calling for products that can put ecosystems at risk (such as meat, soy, maize, rubber, wood and paper) to be proven free from nature destruction before they are sold on the EU market. [1]<\/p>\n<p>Greenpeace EU agriculture and forest campaigner Sini Er\u00e4j\u00e4\u00e4&nbsp;said:<em>&nbsp;\u201cAround the world, an area of forest the size of a football pitch is destroyed faster than even the best player could kick a ball across it. Europe makes an outsized contribution to this destruction through the consumption of many everyday products, but we have a real opportunity to end this complicity. Ministers must improve on the EU Commission\u2019s plan and ensure that everything sold in the EU is free from forest and ecosystem destruction, and the human rights abuse that so often comes with it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The European Commission published a draft anti-deforestation law on 17 November 2021, after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/nature-food\/45406\/over-1-million-people-tell-eu-to-stop-funding-forest-destruction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">over one million people<\/a>&nbsp;and over 160 NGOs in the #Together4Forests coalition called on them to protect human rights, forests and other ecosystems from the impacts of European consumption and investments by banks operating in the EU. The Commission\u2019s proposal would for the first time require companies selling certain products in the EU to show that their supply chains did not lead back to destroyed forests. Environmental groups&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/nature-food\/45934\/glimmer-of-hope-for-eu-anti-deforestation-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">criticised<\/a>&nbsp;the Commission\u2019s plans, however, especially as they would only cover a small number of products, would&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwf.eu\/?uNewsID=5179866\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">not protect other natural ecosystems<\/a>&nbsp;(such as wetlands and savannahs), would&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fern.org\/publications-insight\/landmark-eu-anti-deforestation-law-proposal-could-clean-up-supply-chains-could-it-also-reduce-global-deforestation-2431\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">not adequately protect human rights<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalwitness.org\/en\/press-releases\/new-proposed-eu-law-tackle-global-deforestation-lacks-ambition-finance-and-human-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">do not cover the financial sector<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"article-title\">Next steps<\/h2>\n<p>Environment ministers from the 27 EU national governments will examine the European Commission\u2019s proposed anti-deforestation law and will debate amendments to it. The French government in charge of the ministerial meetings has already indicated they will make&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VSinkevicius\/status\/1484174032585043969?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this law a priority<\/a>&nbsp;during their term.
