Users can make notes or sketches that are visible to other users, and they can get far closer to the art in a VR setting than they would ever be able to in the real world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt felt very emotional to be in front of those pieces,\u201d art student Alejandra Alfonso says in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-EFoXEVCuA8&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video<\/a>&nbsp;for the app.<\/p>\n<p>The five stolen artworks currently on display are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nga.gov\/collection\/artist-info.1822.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rembrandt<\/a>\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rembrandtpaintings.com\/the-storm-on-the-sea-of-galilee.jsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Storm on the Sea of Galilee<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;<\/em>(stolen from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardnermuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum<\/a>&nbsp;in 1990),&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Caravaggio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Caravaggio<\/a>\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.caravaggio.net\/nativity-with-st-francis-and-st-lawrence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Nativity With St. Francis and St. Lawrence<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;(stolen from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonelyplanet.com\/italy\/sicily\/palermo\/attractions\/oratorio-di-san-lorenzo\/a\/poi-sig\/458805\/360009\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oratory of Saint Lawrence<\/a>&nbsp;in 1969),&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.manet.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00c9douard Manet<\/a>\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"#object-details\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Chez Tortoni<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;(stolen from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardnermuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum<\/a>&nbsp;in 1990),&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vangoghmuseum.nl\/en\/art-and-stories\/art\/vincent-van-gogh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vincent van Gogh<\/a>\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vincent-van-gogh.net\/poppy-flowers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Poppy Flowers<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;(stolen twice from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/useum.org\/museum\/Mohamed-Mahmoud-Khalil-Museum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil Museum<\/a>&nbsp;in 1977 and 2010), and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Paul-Cezanne\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paul C\u00e9zanne<\/a>\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/investigate\/violent-crime\/art-theft\/fbi-top-ten-art-crimes\/theft-of-cezannes-view-of-auvers-sur-oise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>View of Auvers-sur-Oise<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;<\/em>(stolen from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashmolean.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ashmolean Museum<\/a>&nbsp;in 1999). In the future, Rockenbach hopes to expand the collection.<\/p>\n<p>Compass is just one of the many companies combining art and VR. Earlier this year, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2022\/01\/28\/what-is-the-metaverse-and-why-does-it-matter-to-the-art-world-experts-weigh-in-and-predict-its-future-impact\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Art Newspaper<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;hosted a panel of experts who discussed their favorite examples of art in the metaverse. Some of these were galleries that exist in virtual spaces, similar to the Stolen Art Gallery, while others were quite different. In a performance last year, for instance, dancers on opposite sides of the Atlantic wore motion capture suits in order to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gold.ac.uk\/calendar\/?id=13686\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dance together<\/a>&nbsp;in the virtual world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe metaverse will revolutionize the way we experience the internet,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/carole-chainon-b34b5a14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carole Chainon<\/a>, co-founder of the extended reality studio&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/jyc.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JYC<\/a>, tells the&nbsp;<em>Art Newspaper<\/em>. \u201cOur tangible, physical world will become increasingly mixed with the virtual.
