But a new finding by MIT physicists is challenging this century-old assumption.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-025-09169-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">paper published in Nature<\/a>, the physicists report the discovery of a \u201cchiral superconductor\u201d \u2014 a material that conducts electricity without resistance, and also, paradoxically, is intrinsically magnetic. Even more surprising: they observed this in graphite, the common material used in pencil lead.<\/p>\n<p>Graphite is made from stacked layers of graphene \u2014 atom-thin sheets of carbon atoms. Occasionally, these layers form a staircase-like \u201crhombohedral\u201d configuration. When four or five graphene layers are stacked this way, they exhibit unusual electronic properties not found in standard graphite.<\/p>\n<p>MIT physicists isolated microscopic flakes of rhombohedral graphene and cooled them to 300 millikelvins. The result: superconductivity, with electrical current flowing without resistance. But even more unexpectedly, the material showed magnetic-like switching between two superconducting states when exposed to an external magnetic field \u2014 a behavior not seen in other superconductors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe general lore is that superconductors do not like magnetic fields,\u201d says Long Ju, assistant professor of physics at MIT. \u201cBut this is the first observation of a superconductor that behaves as a magnet \u2014 a truly bizarre and unique result.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ju and colleagues, including researchers from MIT, Florida State University, the University of Basel, and Japan\u2019s National Institute for Materials Science, conducted extensive tests on the phenomenon, confirming consistent results across six separate samples.<\/p>\n<p>Typically, superconductors repel magnetic fields via the Meissner effect. But in this case, the rhombohedral graphene structure appears to allow electrons to pair and spin in coordinated ways, forming \u201cchiral\u201d Cooper pairs that carry intrinsic momentum \u2014 and thus, internal magnetism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis material seems to switch between two superconducting states, like a magnet flipping direction,\u201d says Zach Hadjri, a student in the group. \u201cIt\u2019s a superconductor that also acts like a magnet \u2014 which doesn\u2019t make any sense by conventional physics!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The researchers believe this unique behavior stems from the electrons\u2019 orbital motion, aligning within a single \u201cvalley\u201d or momentum state, and forming chiral superconductivity \u2014 a potential foundation for topological superconductors and robust quantum computing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything we\u2019ve discovered in this material has been completely unexpected,\u201d says Zhengguang Lu, now assistant professor at Florida State University. \u201cBut the simplicity of the system gives us hope that we can fully understand the underlying physics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is truly remarkable that such an exotic chiral superconductor emerges from such simple ingredients,\u201d concludes MIT professor Liang Fu. \u201cSuperconductivity in rhombohedral graphene will surely have a lot to offer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The research conducted at MIT was supported by the U.S. Department of Energy and a MathWorks Fellowship.<\/p>\n<p><i>Source: Jennifer Chu | MIT News<\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The \u201cone-of-a-kind\u201d phenomenon was observed in ordinary graphite.
