greenhouse gases from the atmosphere"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Greenhouse gases are warming our planet, causing extreme weather and harming the health of populations across the globe<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As we come ever closer to the 1.5\u00b0C global warming limit, set in the 2015 Paris Agreement, it&#8217;s clear that it isn&#8217;t enough to just limit the amount of new greenhouse gas emissions \u2013 we also need to remove existing greenhouse gases from our atmosphere and restore them to solid earth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So just what are greenhouse gases, how do we know how much to remove, and what happens to them afterwards?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Experts from across Oxford have given their answers to some of the most pressing questions when it comes to removing greenhouse gasses from our atmosphere.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What are greenhouse gases?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The emission of\u00a0<\/span><b>greenhouse gases<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0is the major driver of our\u00a0<\/span><b>changing climate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, but what are they and why are they called that?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.physics.ox.ac.uk\/our-people\/stier\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Philip Stier<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0is Professor of Atmospheric Physics in the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.physics.ox.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Department of Physics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0and Director of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-earth.ox.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Intelligent Earth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Oxford&#8217;s UKRI AI Centre for Doctoral Training in AI for the Environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As Professor Stier explains,\u00a0<\/span><b>greenhouse gases<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0are gases that absorb\u00a0<\/span><b>infrared radiation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Infrared radiation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0is emitted from the surface of the Earth, normally escaping to space, keeping Earth&#8217;s radiation in balance with absorbed sunlight, and therefore Earth&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><b>temperatures<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0stable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As the amount of\u00a0<\/span><b>greenhouse gases<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0in the atmosphere increases, the amount of absorbing gas in the\u00a0<\/span><b>atmosphere<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0is raised.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The levels from which\u00a0<\/span><b>radiation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0can escape to\u00a0<\/span><b>space<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0are also raised to levels higher than the\u00a0<\/span><b>atmosphere<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As the\u00a0<\/span><b>atmosphere<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0is colder at higher levels, less\u00a0<\/span><b>radiation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0is emitted to\u00a0<\/span><b>space<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, therefore, as more\u00a0<\/span><b>greenhouse gases<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0are introduced to the\u00a0<\/span><b>atmosphere<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the amount of\u00a0<\/span><b>radiation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0that can be emitted to\u00a0<\/span><b>space<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0is reduced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This\u00a0<\/span><b>warms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0the planet, as we can&#8217;t then balance incoming\u00a0<\/span><b>solar radiation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The analogy with\u00a0<\/span><b>greenhouses<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, though, Professor Stier suggests, is somewhat misleading.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Greenhouses<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0warm themselves via a different mechanism, keeping the heat absorbed from\u00a0<\/span><b>solar radiation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, rather than letting it escape.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Aerosols<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0differ from\u00a0<\/span><b>greenhouse gases<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, but also have a critical impact on our\u00a0<\/span><b>changing climate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Essentially,\u00a0<\/span><b>aerosols<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0are small particles in the\u00a0<\/span><b>atmosphere<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, basically\u00a0<\/span><b>air pollution<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Professor Stier explains, but they can also come from natural sources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They scatter\u00a0<\/span><b>sunlight<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0back to space and make clouds brighter, compounding the scattering of light back to space.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Therefore\u00a0<\/span><b>aerosols<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0cool the Earth, and quite substantially at the moment\u00a0\u2013\u00a0around\u00a0<\/span><b>0.5\u00b0C<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As we continue to clean up\u00a0<\/span><b>air pollution<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, we therefore reduce a\u00a0<\/span><b>cooling effect<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, accelerating\u00a0<\/span><b>global warming<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What is net zero?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The term\u00a0<\/span><b>net zero<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0is a common part of our language when we talk about action towards\u00a0<\/span><b>climate change<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, but what does it mean, and how do we get there?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsg.ox.ac.uk\/people\/thomas-hale\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thomas Hale<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0is Professor in Public Policy (Global Public Policy) at the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsg.ox.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Blavatnik School of Government<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Net zero<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, he says, means reducing our\u00a0<\/span><b>emissions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0to about\u00a0<\/span><b>80<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span><b>90%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0less than what they are today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.physics.ox.ac.uk\/our-people\/allenm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Myles Allen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0is Head of Atmospheric,\u00a0Oceanic and Planetary Physics in the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.physics.ox.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Department of Physics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and Professor of Geosystem Science in the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geog.ox.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">School of Geography and the Environment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The reason\u00a0<\/span><b>net zero<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0works, Professor Allen explains, is that if we reduce the rate at which we put\u00a0<\/span><b>carbon dioxide<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0(CO\u2082) into the\u00a0<\/span><b>atmosphere<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0to zero, and allow nature to continue to take\u00a0<\/span><b>carbon dioxide<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0out of the\u00a0<\/span><b>atmosphere<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, that&#8217;s enough to draw down\u00a0<\/span><b>CO\u2082<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0concentrations in the\u00a0<\/span><b>atmosphere<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0just fast enough to stop\u00a0<\/span><b>temperatures<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0rising any further.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To achieve\u00a0<\/span><b>net zero<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0emissions, Professor Allen highlights the most important thing that we need to do\u00a0\u2013\u00a0reducing the rate at which we are producing\u00a0<\/span><b>carbon dioxide<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0from activities like the burning of\u00a0<\/span><b>fossil fuels<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><b>deforestation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We also to scale up our ability to remove\u00a0<\/span><b>greenhouse gases<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0like\u00a0<\/span><b>carbon dioxide<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0from the\u00a0<\/span><b>atmosphere<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0and put them back underground.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are many innovative ways this can be done, Professor Allen says, but ultimately,\u00a0<\/span><b>net zero<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0has to mean a like for like balance of\u00a0<\/span><b>carbon dioxide<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0coming from fossil sources with\u00a0<\/span><b>carbon dioxide<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0committed to permanent\u00a0<\/span><b>disposal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is what is called\u00a0<\/span><b>geological\u00a0net zero<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0\u2013\u00a0a balance at the Earth&#8217;s crust.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What is a carbon budget?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Setting a\u00a0<\/span><b>budget<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0for the amount of\u00a0<\/span><b>carbon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0that can be emitted into the atmosphere is a useful tool for\u00a0<\/span><b>global climate action<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. But what does the\u00a0<\/span><b>carbon budget<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0entail, and who sets it?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithschool.ox.ac.uk\/person\/professor-cameron-hepburn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cameron Hepburn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0is Battcock Professor of Environmental Economics in the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geog.ox.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">School of Geography and the Environment&#8217;s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithschool.ox.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Smith School of Enterprise and Environment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If we want to stop the planet\u00a0<\/span><b>warming<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the have to get our human-caused\u00a0<\/span><b>emissions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0down to\u00a0<\/span><b>zero<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0in time to stop\u00a0<\/span><b>warming<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0to a level like\u00a0<\/span><b>1.5<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span><b>2\u00b0C<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsg.ox.ac.uk\/people\/thomas-hale\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thomas Hale<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Professor in Public Policy (Global Public Policy) at the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsg.ox.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Blavatnik School of Government<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, highlights just how long our carbon emissions stay in the atmosphere for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The\u00a0<\/span><b>carbon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0that powered the first steam engine, he says, is still up there in part. What we\u00a0<\/span><b>emit<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0now will still be in the\u00a0<\/span><b>atmosphere<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0for our children, and their grandchildren.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We need, therefore, to think of this as a long-term cumulative problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A\u00a0<\/span><b>budget\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in this case, helps you understand how much of a rise in<\/span><b>\u00a0temperature\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">you will face, depending on levels of\u00a0<\/span><b>emissions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The\u00a0<\/span><b>carbon budget<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Professor Hepburn explains, is set by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the\u00a0<\/span><b>IPCC<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At the moment, it is estimated that there are\u00a0<\/span><b>2-300<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><b>billion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0tonnes of\u00a0<\/span><b>CO\u2082<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0left in the\u00a0<\/span><b>budget\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">before we hit the\u00a0<\/span><b>1.5\u00b0C<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0temperature threshold, but the problem is that there is no global consensus on how to divide this\u00a0<\/span><b>budget<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So, as Professor Hale explains, we need to find\u00a0<\/span><b>equitable solutions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0for a\u00a0<\/span><b>fair<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><b>effective<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0distribution of the\u00a0<\/span><b>carbon budget<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which as Professor Hepburn states, only has a single digit number of years left until it is\u00a0<\/span><b>exceeded<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How do we remove greenhouse gases?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In addition to reducing our\u00a0<\/span><b>greenhouse gas emissions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, we&#8217;re going to have to remove existing\u00a0<\/span><b>greenhouse gases<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, especially\u00a0<\/span><b>carbon dioxide<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0(CO\u2082) from our atmosphere\u00a0\u2013\u00a0this is called\u00a0<\/span><b>carbon dioxide removal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Just how possible is this, and can we work with\u00a0<\/span><b>nature<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0to find\u00a0<\/span><b>solution<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biology.ox.ac.uk\/people\/nathalie-seddon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nathalie Seddon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0is Professor of Biodiversity in the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biology.ox.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Department of Biology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0and the founding Director of the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturebasedsolutionsinitiative.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nature-based solutions Initiative (NbSI)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There&#8217;s an enormous amount evidence, Professor Seddon argues, to demonstrate the essential role that\u00a0<\/span><b>nature<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0has to play in the\u00a0<\/span><b>removal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span><b>carbon dioxide<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0from the\u00a0<\/span><b>atmosphere<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithschool.ox.ac.uk\/person\/professor-cameron-hepburn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cameron Hepburn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Battcock Professor of Environmental Economics in the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geog.ox.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">School of Geography and the Environment&#8217;s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithschool.ox.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Smith School of Enterprise and Environment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, highlights that there are also\u00a0<\/span><b>industrial<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0ways to remove\u00a0<\/span><b>carbon dioxide<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0from the\u00a0<\/span><b>atmosphere<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This would include the scaling up of chemical processes where\u00a0<\/span><b>CO\u2082<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0can be stored\u00a0<\/span><b>underground<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0in rocks, where it won&#8217;t end up back in the\u00a0<\/span><b>atmosphere<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0any time soon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Professor Hepburn also highlights the key role of\u00a0<\/span><b>nature<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span><b>carbon dioxide removal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, noting that the restoration of nature could also buy us more time to sort some the problem of\u00a0<\/span><b>climate change<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What happens once you remove greenhouse gases?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are two main ways in which\u00a0<\/span><b>carbon dioxide<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0(CO\u2082), can be removed from the\u00a0<\/span><b>atmosphere<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. But once it&#8217;s removed, where does it go?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eci.ox.ac.uk\/person\/professor-nick-eyre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nick Eyre<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0is Emeritus Professor of Energy and Climate Policy and was the founding co-Director of the University&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/zero.ox.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ZERO Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As Professor Eyre explains, the first is neatly done by green plants, turning\u00a0<\/span><b>carbon dioxide<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0into plant proteins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The second is through a more\u00a0<\/span><b>geo-engineering<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0approach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is where\u00a0<\/span><b>carbon dioxide<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0is sucked out of the\u00a0<\/span><b>atmosphere<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0and pumped\u00a0<\/span><b>underground<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0into\u00a0<\/span><b>geological storage<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Once\u00a0<\/span><b>carbon dioxide<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0is captured, and purified, it needs to be\u00a0<\/span><b>compressed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Under sufficient pressure, 15 atmospheres, it becomes a\u00a0<\/span><b>liquid<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.physics.ox.ac.uk\/our-people\/allenm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Professor Myles Allen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Head of Atmospheric,\u00a0Oceanic and Planetary Physics in the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.physics.ox.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Department of Physics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and Professor of Geosystem Science in the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geog.ox.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">School of Geography and the Environment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, explains, this makes it slightly more dense than hydrocarbon fuels, allowing it to be\u00a0<\/span><b>injected<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0into\u00a0<\/span><b>rock formations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This needs to be done safely though, and as Professor Allen points out, it&#8217;s a racing certainty that we need to remove\u00a0<\/span><b>carbon dioxide<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0from the\u00a0<\/span><b>atmosphere<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0due to the continued\u00a0<\/span><b>emissions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span><b>greenhouse gases<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight:
