It\u2019s also a question that is alive and well during today\u2019s \u2018golden age of television\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIn France, the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States and many other countries, a growing number of television series are set \u2018behind the scenes\u2019 of democratic regimes faced with terrorist threats,\u201d says Sandra Laugier, professor of Philosophy at Paris 1 Panth\u00e9on-Sorbonne University(opens in new window).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While these shows may reveal a moral state of the world, are democratic societies taking advantage of their popularity? If not, should they be?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These are the types of questions raised by the EU-funded DEMOSERIES(opens in new window) project.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Television as a type of soft power<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to Laugier, the project\u2019s principal investigator, popular programmes such as \u201824\u2019, \u2018Homeland\u2019, \u2018Berlin Station\u2019, \u2018Le Bureau des L\u00e9gendes\u2019, \u2018Deutschland\u2019 and \u2018Conflict\u2019 can all be analysed as \u2018mirrors\u2019 of society or even ideological tools. But they can also be understood as new resources for the education, creativity and perfectibility of their audiences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBy expressing complex issues through narrative and characters, these shows act as a sort of \u2018soft power\u2019 that can serve as a resource for public policies and democratic conversations,\u201d explains Laugier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yet these security TV series\u2019 aesthetic potential for visualising ethical issues or their capacity to enable a democratic empowerment of viewers has not been deeply analysed. Likewise, the power these shows have to confront the cultural and social upheavals happening in real life or to develop a collective inquiry into democratic values and human security has been left largely unstudied.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How TV changes us \u2013 and the world<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To help fill in these blanks, the European Research Council(opens in new window) supported project used a unique approach to ethics that is based on multifaceted situations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Researchers also conducted large-scale reception surveys and extensive interviews with security experts, showrunners and viewers, as well as analysed the social media conversations happening around a show\u2019s airing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBy studying both classic and recent series, we confirmed that TV series change us \u2013 and the world,\u201d says Laugier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For example, the classic \u2018Buffy the Vampire Slayer\u2019 played a significant role in promoting sexual equality among its teenage audience. The series \u201824\u2019, launched in the aftermath of 9\/11, and \u2018Homeland\u2019, a decade later, raised awareness of long-term terrorist threats, as well as the risk of moral degeneration in democracies engaged in the fight against \u2018terror\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cTV series aim to arouse our interest or provoke our reflection of the world in which we live, but they can also generate a \u2018reality effect\u2019, such as when the hero of the Ukrainian series \u2018Servant of the People\u2019, actor Volodymyr Zelensky, was elected president in real life,\u201d adds Laugier.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Political education through television<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to Laugier, the DEMOSERIES project highlights the crucial role television series can play in a time when democratic values are under threat in Europe and around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIn a world where many political actors are promoting false anti-democratic values, political education through television certainly offers a solution that policymakers and security actors can no longer afford to ignore,\u201d concludes Laugier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Laugier and her team are now exploring the transformative potential of TV series as creative catalysts for peacebuilding, conflict prevention and societal reconciliation.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More than entertainment, television programmes can promote democratic ideals and even change the world Whether life imitates art or art imitates life is an age-old question.
