Can they be transformed from urban and social barriers into <strong>flexible<\/strong><br \/><strong>spaces<\/strong> for living, playing and farming?<\/p>\n<p>These are some of the questions addressed by the <strong>\u201cNew Deal\u201d<\/strong> explored by&nbsp;design and innovation office <strong>CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati<\/strong>, as part of a curatorial team led by SEURA Architectes,&nbsp;alongside Jornet Llop Pastor Arquitectes, landscapers Anna Cervera and Marina Zahonero, and Leonard, VINCI&nbsp;Group&#8217;s foresight platform.<\/p>\n<p>As urban mobility is being reshaped by technological innovations &#8211; from EV (<strong>Electric&nbsp;vehicles<\/strong>) and AV (<strong>Autonomous Vehicles<\/strong>) to data-driven multimodality &#8211; the exhibition will explore the future of the&nbsp;French capital\u2019s famous \u201cPeripherique\u201d ring road. The \u201cNew Deal\u201d is part of the <em>\u201cLes Routes du Futur du Grand&nbsp;Paris\u201d<\/em> exhibition, organized by the <strong>Forum M\u00e9tropolitain du Grand Paris<\/strong> and opening at the Pavilion de l\u2019Arsenal on&nbsp;June 6 th 2019 (until August 31 st 2019).<\/p>\n<p>Drawing from scientific research, including that carried out at Carlo Ratti\u2019s MIT Senseable City Lab, the exhibition<br \/>envisions how <strong>Paris\u2019 highways<\/strong> might look like<a href=\"upgrading-infrastructure-become-smart-city&amp;catid=20&amp;lang=en-GB\"> in 2050<\/a>. By then, autonomous mobility and new technologies will<br \/>have <strong>transformed the mobility landscape<\/strong>, allowing cities to completely <strong>rethink 20th-century<\/strong> road infrastructure,<br \/>hopefully with positive social and environmental consequences.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cNew Deal\u201d presents <strong>five visions<\/strong> to transform the main highways of Paris\u2019 metropolitan area:<br \/>The first two visions for 2050 are dedicated to the <strong>\u201cBoulevard Peripherique\u201d<\/strong>, the (in)famous highway circling the<br \/>French capital, like a necklace, for more than 35 kilometers, sometimes running slightly below ground. In <strong>\u201cHabiter<\/strong><br \/><strong>Le Lateralit\u00e9\u201d<\/strong> (\u201cLiving Laterality\u201d), the current number of car lanes is more than halved, and the remaining space is<br \/>converted into a&nbsp;reconfigurable playground. In <strong>\u201cHabiter les Dessus\u201d<\/strong> (\u201cLiving Above\u201d), a series of green residential<br \/>buildings are placed over the Peripherique almost like a set of inhabitable bridges, recomposing a historical<br \/>fracture between the two Paris\u2019: that of the historical city and that of the banlieues. Such changes are permitted by<br \/><a href=\"indra-launches-air-drones-the-most-advanced-solution-for-organizing-uav-traffic&amp;catid=25&amp;lang=en-GB\">EVs and AVs<\/a>, which could make our roads cleaner, less polluted and safer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>OTHER VISIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The other visions on show at the Pavilion de l\u2019Arsenal are dedicated to three increasingly suburban highways in<br \/>the<strong> Ile de France<\/strong> region, proposing new functions like energy production and farming.<strong> \u201cLa voie monde\u201d<\/strong> (\u201cThe<br \/>street of the world\u201d) envisions how the gigantic A6 French highway can go from having 12 to four car lanes, using<br \/>the central part for greenhouses or for <strong>a photovoltaic plant to generate solar energy<\/strong> while slashing heat<br \/>production.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cMultimodalite Partout\u201d<\/strong> (\u201cMultimodality Everywhere\u201d) and <strong>\u201cLa Voie Dynamique\u201d<\/strong> (\u201cThe Dynamic Road\u201d)<br \/>leverage on real-time mobility data to create new public spaces and allow commuters to get to their destination<br \/>more efficiently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the 20th century, urbanists made space for bigger roads and more cars. Today, we can leverage innovation in<br \/>mobility to imagine <strong>creating a more seamless and inclusive city<\/strong>,\u201d says <strong>Carlo Ratti<\/strong>, founding partner of CRA and<br \/>director of the MIT Senseable City Lab.<\/p>\n<p>This project continues CRA\u2019s long-time interest in autonomous mobility. Recently, CRA\u2019s master plan for an<br \/>innovation district on the ex-site of the <strong>Expo Milano 2015<\/strong> included streets and roads designed for a future of<br \/>exclusively self-driving vehicles. CRA also collaborated with Google\u2019s sister company <strong>Sidewalk Labs<\/strong> on the&nbsp;<span style=\"background-color: inherit;color: inherit;font-family: inherit;font-size: 1rem\">prototype of a flexible paving system allowing for a greater degree of flexibility in how a street is used at different&nbsp;<\/span>moments of the day, currently being prototyped in Toronto. Furthermore, the <strong>Senseable City Lab<\/strong> has done&nbsp;extensive research into the way self-driving will change the urban experience and the impact of future shared&nbsp;mobility models.
