Iran, Azerbaijan, Georgia confer on establishing new transit route<\/em><\/p>\n

Iran, Azerbaijan<\/strong>, and Georgia<\/strong> have reached an agreement for establishing a transit route connecting the Persian Gulf to the Black Sea<\/strong>, an official with Iran\u2019s Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization (RMTO)<\/strong> announced.<\/p>\n

\u201cFollowing a trip to hold two meetings [on road transportation] with Azerbaijan and Georgia, we proposed an initiative to the two countries to create a new transit corridor for regional convergence,\u201d<\/em> Director-General of RMTP Office of International Transit and Transportation Javad Hedayati<\/strong> told ISNA on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course, this plan was already proposed eight years ago, but due to the fact that many countries were involved in this agreement, it has not been implemented yet and the parties have not reached a consensus,\u201d<\/em> Hedayati<\/strong> added.<\/p>\n

He went on to say that the establishment of this new route could connect the Persian Gulf to the Black Sea, adding: \u201cGeorgia and Iran are the two main parties to the agreement, as Iran is connected to the free waters through the Persian Gulf, and Georgia has two important trading ports east of the Black Sea; On the other hand, Georgia and Azerbaijan have made great efforts to improve and develop their transportation infrastructure, so we tried to increase cooperation with both these countries.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Based on the agreement, first, within the next four months some pilot cargoes will be sent from Iran to deliver Iranian goods to Azerbaijan through the Astara border and also to Bulgaria or other Eastern European countries via Georgian ports on the Black Sea.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are trying to carry out the pilot phase of this project before the end of the [current Iranian calendar] year (March 20, 2022) so that obstacles and issues could be identified and finally in a final tripartite meeting between the three countries a mechanism will be created to reduce shipping costs and time,\u201d<\/em> the official explained.<\/p>\n

Iran is one of the countries that have a special status in trade and transit relations due to its strategic location and special geography, as the country is the passage of several important international corridors.<\/p>\n

In the south of Iran is the Persian Gulf, which is home to the world’s major oil-producing countries. This region is considered the energy bottleneck of the world.<\/p>\n

In the north of Iran is the Caspian Sea, which is the best bridge between Iran, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Azerbaijan and can play an important role in trade between these countries.<\/p>\n

The country, on the other hand, borders Iraq, Turkey, Pakistan, and Afghanistan to the west and east.<\/p>\n

In other words, it can be said that Iran communicates with 15 countries through land and water borders, and at the same time it can act as a bridge between these countries (with each other and other parts of the world).<\/p>\n

Considering the country\u2019s transit statistics, Iran is taking necessary measures to make the most of its strategic status in this due.<\/p>\n
