Estos virus matan bacterias y se presentan a d\u00eda de hoy como una terapia alternativa al uso de antibi\u00f3ticos (terapia f\u00e1gica). Es decir, la misma herramienta que permite a las bacterias resistir a los antibi\u00f3ticos da resistencia a nuevas terapias alternativas.<\/p>\n<p>Los integrones son plataformas gen\u00e9ticas que permiten a las bacterias captar y acumular genes de diversas funciones, entre ellos los de resistencia a los antibi\u00f3ticos. El estudio publicado en <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1126\/science.ads0915\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><i>Science<\/i><\/a> da un paso m\u00e1s all\u00e1 al describir que tambi\u00e9n portan genes capaces de defender a las bacterias de terapias f\u00e1gicas.<\/p>\n<p>Estos genes, denominados \u00abBRiCs\u00bb (por sus siglas en ingl\u00e9s, Bacteriophage Resistance integron Cassettes), pueden otorgar a las bacterias protecci\u00f3n contra diferentes tipos de virus y, en combinaci\u00f3n con otros genes de resistencia a antibi\u00f3ticos, dotar a la bacteria de protecci\u00f3n frente a fagos y antibi\u00f3ticos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEste descubrimiento ampl\u00eda significativamente nuestro conocimiento sobre c\u00f3mo las bacterias adquieren y mantienen sus defensas, destacando un mecanismo evolutivo m\u00e1s complejo de lo que se cre\u00eda\u201d, indica Jos\u00e9 Antonio Escudero, investigador del Departamento de Sanidad Animal y del Centro de Vigilancia Sanitaria Veterinaria VISAVET de la UCM.<\/p>\n<p>Este estudio desarrollado durante m\u00e1s de dos a\u00f1os a\u00fana an\u00e1lisis bioinform\u00e1ticos y experimentos <i>in vitro<\/i>. Para descubrir estos nuevos mecanismos de resistencia a fagos se explor\u00f3 la funci\u00f3n de m\u00e1s de 120 genes bacterianos de funci\u00f3n desconocida alojados en integrones. La funci\u00f3n antif\u00e1gica de estos genes se test\u00f3 en diferentes bacterias modelo frente a distintos tipos de fagos en condiciones controladas, confirmando su funci\u00f3n defensiva en importantes pat\u00f3genos humanos como <i>Escherichia coli<\/i>, <i>Klebsiella pneumoniae<\/i> y <i>Pseudomonas aeruginosa<\/i>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"articletitle\">Impacto y aplicaciones pr\u00e1cticas<\/h2>\n<p>Estos resultados son clave en un contexto de salud p\u00fablica, sobre todo en un momento en el que la resistencia a los antibi\u00f3ticos es un problema creciente. Si estos genes de defensa se siguen propagando r\u00e1pidamente, podr\u00edan hacer que la terapia con fagos \u2014una alternativa prometedora a los antibi\u00f3ticos convencionales\u2014 pierda efectividad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEntender c\u00f3mo se propagan estas defensas bacterianas nos ayudar\u00eda a anticiparnos y frenar la aparici\u00f3n de nuevas resistencias en hospitales y otros entornos cl\u00ednicos\u201d, sentencia Escudero.<\/p>\n<p>Las pr\u00f3ximas investigaciones del equipo cient\u00edfico se encaminar\u00edan al estudio del origen evolutivo y a la epidemiolog\u00eda de estos sistemas defensivos en la naturaleza.
