Reproducir la complejidad del movimiento y el comportamiento cooperativo de los sistemas naturales no es sencillo, pero el equipo del proyecto i-NANOSWARMS ha aceptado el reto. El proyecto est\u00e1 desarrollando enjambres de nanobots inteligentes alimentados por enzimas, capaces de propulsarse mediante combustibles biocompatibles y biodisponibles, y tambi\u00e9n de cooperar, comunicarse e interactuar entre s\u00ed y con su entorno.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Desde su lanzamiento en 2020, los investigadores de i-NANOSWARMS han estado trabajando en c\u00f3mo dise\u00f1ar estos complejos sistemas de enjambre. Han estado explorando c\u00f3mo hacer que se muevan en tres dimensiones y c\u00f3mo utilizar reacciones de comunicaci\u00f3n para guiarlas a lugares espec\u00edficos, como ocurre con un proceso llamado \u00abquimiotaxis\u00bb en la naturaleza. \u00abUna vez conseguido eso, se pueden prever aplicaciones pr\u00e1cticas en biomedicina\u00bb, afirma el director del proyecto, Samuel S\u00e1nchez, profesor de investigaci\u00f3n ICREA del Instituto de Bioingenier\u00eda de Catalu\u00f1a (IBEC), que coordina i-NANOSWARMS.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Principales logros<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hasta ahora, el equipo del proyecto ha dise\u00f1ado con \u00e9xito el movimiento colectivo de nanomotores que se mueven en tres dimensiones, imitando la bioconvecci\u00f3n. En cuanto a las aplicaciones biom\u00e9dicas, los enjambres de nanobots son capaces de interactuar con medios complejos como el moco y el l\u00edquido sinovial \u2014un l\u00edquido espeso que se encuentra entre nuestras articulaciones\u2014 para mejorar el transporte de mol\u00e9culas peque\u00f1as.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Los investigadores de i-NANOSWARMS tambi\u00e9n introdujeron en su trabajo el concepto de estigmergia. Se trata de un mecanismo mediante el cual las hormigas y las termitas se comunican liberando se\u00f1ales qu\u00edmicas que reciben las hormigas y termitas que las siguen. \u00abEn este proyecto utilizamos \u201ctropas\u201d que trabajan juntas, donde la primera tropa modifica un medio complejo de alta viscosidad y luego una segunda tropa sigue este camino generado qu\u00edmico-f\u00edsicamente para transportar eficientemente el principio activo\u00bb, explica S\u00e1nchez.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sin embargo, probablemente el trabajo m\u00e1s impactante llevado a cabo en i-NANOSWARMS hasta la fecha sea la investigaci\u00f3n realizada utilizando el comportamiento en enjambre de los nanomotores accionados por ureasa para el c\u00e1ncer de vejiga. Los notables resultados obtenidos en este campo han convertido al equipo del proyecto en l\u00edder en la materia. \u00abPor ejemplo, fuimos los primeros en emplear la monitorizaci\u00f3n \u201cin vivo\u201d mediante t\u00e9cnicas de imagen m\u00e9dica en enjambres de esos nanobots\u00bb, observa el investigador. \u00abA partir de eso, logramos una impresionante reducci\u00f3n tumoral en tumores de vejiga en ratones mediante terapia con radionucleidos e inmunoterapia\u00bb.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">El siguiente paso para i-NANOSWARMS (Cooperative Intelligence in Swarms of Enzyme-Nanobots) es pasar de los nanomotores inorg\u00e1nicos utilizados hasta ahora en su trabajo a motores org\u00e1nicos y degradables aprobados por la Agencia Europea de Medicamentos y el Organismo para el Control de Alimentos y Medicamentos de Estado Unidos. Se llevar\u00e1n a cabo investigaciones adicionales sobre la comunicaci\u00f3n entre nanobots, con reacciones en cascada para guiarlos, quimiotaxis y otras estrategias de guiado.
