Un equipo de investigadores perfeccion\u00f3 el control de los chorros de fluidos para agilizar el desarrollo de inyecciones sin agujas<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Cada d\u00eda, se utilizan casi cuarenta y cuatro millones de agujas. Las agujas son esenciales para la vacunaci\u00f3n, la toma de muestras de sangre y la administraci\u00f3n de medicamentos. Y con ellas se han hecho millones de tatuajes. Sin embargo, deben usarse bien, infunden temor en muchas personas y generan muchos residuos.<\/span><\/p>\n

La capacidad de inyectar fluidos en tejidos blandos sin necesidad de emplear agujas podr\u00eda tener repercusiones de gran calado, tanto en la atenci\u00f3n sanitaria como en otros \u00e1mbitos. Un m\u00e9todo prometedor consiste en utilizar chorros microflu\u00eddicos a alta presi\u00f3n para atravesar la superficie, un objetivo que puede parecer sencillo, pero que ha resultado extraordinariamente dif\u00edcil de lograr.<\/span><\/p>\n

David Fern\u00e1ndez Rivas(se abrir\u00e1 en una nueva ventana), ingeniero nuclear y profesor titular en la Universidad de Twente, espera tener \u00e9xito en ello. \u00abAl igual que las personas con tatuajes sufren estigmas, y los pacientes (por ejemplo, con diabetes) deben hacer frente a obst\u00e1culos y discriminaciones, analic\u00e9 c\u00f3mo se han usado otras tecnolog\u00edas en el pasado para inyectar sin agujas\u00bb, comenta Fern\u00e1ndez Rivas. \u00abLa capacidad de trascender disciplinas y fronteras es lo que define mi trabajo de ingenier\u00eda\u00bb.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fern\u00e1ndez Rivas coordin\u00f3 el proyecto BuBble Gun(se abrir\u00e1 en una nueva ventana), financiado con fondos europeos, donde lider\u00f3 un equipo de investigadores que mejor\u00f3 el control de los chorros microflu\u00eddicos. El equipo trabaj\u00f3 para lograr una penetraci\u00f3n limpia, sin salpicaduras ni dispersi\u00f3n, ya que estos efectos pueden provocar contaminaci\u00f3n o alterar la dosis.<\/span><\/p>\n

Estudio de la bal\u00edstica de got\u00edculas<\/h2>\n

El equipo efectu\u00f3 sobre todo experimentos en el laboratorio, utilizando microflu\u00eddica y componentes \u00f3pticos para expulsar gotas de diferentes fluidos.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00abLa bal\u00edstica de estas got\u00edculas nos permiti\u00f3 estudiar fen\u00f3menos muy interesantes, incluido el impacto en sustitutos de la piel, como un primer paso hacia la inyecci\u00f3n (en el futuro) sin agujas\u00bb, agrega Fern\u00e1ndez Rivas.<\/span><\/p>\n

La t\u00e9cnica(se abrir\u00e1 en una nueva ventana) del equipo utiliza un l\u00e1ser para calentar un l\u00edquido en un canal peque\u00f1o. A medida que aumenta la temperatura, se forma una burbuja que crece r\u00e1pidamente y genera chorros que se desplazan a gran velocidad y con un tama\u00f1o muy peque\u00f1o, comparable al de las c\u00e9lulas cut\u00e1neas. \u00abEsto nos permite inyectar o impregnar la piel sin causar el da\u00f1o que provocan las agujas\u00bb, explica Fern\u00e1ndez Rivas.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dise\u00f1o de prototipos l\u00e1ser<\/h2>\n

Uno de los principales resultados del proyecto fue el uso de diferentes l\u00e1seres, combinados con diferentes dise\u00f1os de canales microflu\u00eddicos. Esto ayud\u00f3 al equipo a establecer un amplio rango de par\u00e1metros(se abrir\u00e1 en una nueva ventana) para guiar el desarrollo futuro de microchorros para aplicaciones biom\u00e9dicas y otras \u00e1reas.<\/span><\/p>\n

Los cient\u00edficos ya han registrado varias patentes de su tecnolog\u00eda y han desarrollado tres proyectos de prueba de concepto. El trabajo ha ganado(se abrir\u00e1 en una nueva ventana) varios(se abrir\u00e1 en una nueva ventana) premios(se abrir\u00e1 en una nueva ventana), que, seg\u00fan Fern\u00e1ndez Rivas, ponen de manifiesto la importancia de su m\u00e9todo.<\/span><\/p>\n

Desde la impresi\u00f3n 3D hasta las inyecciones en plantas<\/span><\/p>\n

El desarrollo satisfactorio de inyecciones sin agujas podr\u00eda tener amplias repercusiones en \u00e1mbitos como la fabricaci\u00f3n por adici\u00f3n, o impresi\u00f3n 3D.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00abDepositar peque\u00f1os vol\u00famenes de diferentes materiales puede ofrecer un mayor control sobre las propiedades de nuevos materiales o mejorar las ya existentes\u00bb, comenta Fern\u00e1ndez Rivas, cuyo proyecto BuBble Gun fue financiado por el Consejo Europeo de Investigaci\u00f3n(se abrir\u00e1 en una nueva ventana).<\/span><\/p>\n

En los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os, el equipo ha probado las inyecciones en plantas, piel \u00abex vivo\u00bb y diferentes l\u00edquidos de inter\u00e9s para procesos qu\u00edmicos.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gracias al \u00e9xito del proyecto, Fern\u00e1ndez Rivas cofund\u00f3 la empresa derivada FlowBeams(se abrir\u00e1 en una nueva ventana), que tiene como objetivo comercializar en el futuro la tecnolog\u00eda de inyecciones sin agujas.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00abHace poco tambi\u00e9n obtuvimos una subvenci\u00f3n del programa Transici\u00f3n del Consejo Europeo de Innovaci\u00f3n(se abrir\u00e1 en una nueva ventana) para mejorar el nivel de preparaci\u00f3n tecnol\u00f3gica del producto, y este a\u00f1o fuimos galardonados con otros premios, entre ellos el Premio a la Innovaci\u00f3n CES(se abrir\u00e1 en una nueva ventana) \u00bb, concluye Fern\u00e1ndez Rivas.<\/span><\/p>\n
