UU.)\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Han publicado un art\u00edculo de revisi\u00f3n exhaustivo en la revista Cell que propone un nuevo marco para comprender a los neutr\u00f3filos, las c\u00e9lulas m\u00e1s abundantes del sistema inmunitario.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A partir de una amplia base de evidencias procedentes de investigaciones recientes, los autores describen a los neutr\u00f3filos como un colectivo din\u00e1mico y adaptable, capaz de una notable diversificaci\u00f3n funcional y de presentar formas de memoria inmunol\u00f3gica, m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de los roles que tradicionalmente se les atribu\u00edan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Al integrar hallazgos en c\u00e1ncer, inflamaci\u00f3n e inmunolog\u00eda de sistemas, la revisi\u00f3n redefine la manera en que se entienden los neutr\u00f3filos en la salud y la enfermedad, y pone de relieve nuevas rutas conceptuales para el desarrollo de estrategias terap\u00e9uticas innovadoras dirigidas a la disfunci\u00f3n inmunitaria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cLos neutr\u00f3filos son las c\u00e9lulas m\u00e1s abundantes del sistema inmunitario y las primeras que responden en el organismo cuando aparece una infecci\u00f3n o un da\u00f1o. Pero estas c\u00e9lulas no s\u00f3lo ayudan a luchar contra los pat\u00f3genos, sino que tambi\u00e9n reparan los tejidos y ayudan en la formaci\u00f3n de vasos sangu\u00edneos\u201d, explica Iv\u00e1n Ballesteros, profesor del Departamento de Neurociencia y Ciencias Biom\u00e9dicas de la UC3M e investigador del CNIC, que ha publicado este trabajo junto a Andr\u00e9s Hidalgo, del Departamento de Inmunobiolog\u00eda de la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de Yale y tambi\u00e9n investigador del CNIC. \u201cPor lo tanto \u2014contin\u00faa\u2014 si queremos entender c\u00f3mo funcionan los neutr\u00f3filos, tenemos que estudiarlos en su conjunto, como si fuera un hormiguero: no podemos estudiar qu\u00e9 hace una hormiga obrera o una hormiga soldado por separado; tenemos que comprender c\u00f3mo se coordinan las c\u00e9lulas y qu\u00e9 papel desempe\u00f1a cada una de ellas\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tradicionalmente, los neutr\u00f3filos se han descrito como c\u00e9lulas especializadas en la eliminaci\u00f3n r\u00e1pida de pat\u00f3genos y con una vida muy limitada. Sin embargo, los autores proponen que estas c\u00e9lulas poseen una notable capacidad de adaptaci\u00f3n a distintos tejidos y contextos, participan en procesos como la inflamaci\u00f3n est\u00e9ril, la reparaci\u00f3n tisular o el c\u00e1ncer, y presentan comportamientos colectivos coordinados, similares a los observados en otros sistemas biol\u00f3gicos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Los investigadores destacan que este nuevo marco conceptual puede ayudar a reinterpretar el papel de los neutr\u00f3filos en numerosas enfermedades, desde el c\u00e1ncer hasta las patolog\u00edas inflamatorias o autoinmunes. En este sentido, podr\u00eda abrir nuevas v\u00edas terap\u00e9uticas dirigidas a modular su producci\u00f3n y su programaci\u00f3n funcional. \u201cEl estudio pone de relieve que los neutr\u00f3filos no son meros ejecutores de respuestas inmunes inmediatas, sino un sistema altamente organizado, pl\u00e1stico y con memoria, cuyo potencial terap\u00e9utico todav\u00eda est\u00e1 lejos de haberse explotado\u201d, a\u00f1ade Andr\u00e9s Hidalgo.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Este trabajo propone que el colectivo de neutr\u00f3filos est\u00e1 organizado en dos compartimentos funcionales interconectados: uno \u201cgranulopoy\u00e9tico\u201d, localizado principalmente en la m\u00e9dula \u00f3sea y encargado de la producci\u00f3n de neutr\u00f3filos; y otro \u201cmaduro\u201d, formado por las c\u00e9lulas ya diferenciadas que circulan por la sangre y los tejidos. Esta organizaci\u00f3n permitir\u00eda al sistema responder con rapidez a agresiones locales, al tiempo que mantiene una memoria de exposiciones previas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Seg\u00fan el modelo propuesto por los investigadores, esta estructura explica c\u00f3mo los neutr\u00f3filos pueden mostrar una gran diversidad funcional, adaptarse a se\u00f1ales locales de distintos \u00f3rganos y participar en procesos tan variados como la angiog\u00e9nesis, la regulaci\u00f3n de la respuesta inmunitaria o el mantenimiento de la homeostasis tisular.
