Despu\u00e9s de atiborrarse de datos, son capaces de hacer cosas como transcribir un discurso a texto o describir im\u00e1genes con una precisi\u00f3n casi perfecta (ver <\/span><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.es\/s\/3479\/aprendizaje-profundo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #f90e1e\">Las 10 tecnolog\u00edas emergentes m\u00e1s rompedoras 2013: Aprendizaje profundo<\/span><\/a><\/em><span style=\"color: #333333\">).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 10pt\"><span style=\"color: #333333\">Lo que m\u00e1s llama la atenci\u00f3n es que las redes neuronales, que intentan simular la estructura del cerebro humano, normalmente <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #333333\"><b>se construyen en software en lugar de hardware<\/b><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #333333\">, y el software se ejecuta en chips de ordenador convencionales. Eso ralentiza las cosas.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 10pt\"><span style=\"color: #333333\">Pero IBM acaba de demostrar que construir los elementos clave de una red neuronal <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #333333\"><b>directamente sobre el silicio logra que el sistema sea 100 veces m\u00e1s eficiente<\/b><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #333333\">. En los pr\u00f3ximos a\u00f1os, los chips construidos de esta manera podr\u00edan acelerar el aprendizaje autom\u00e1tico.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 10pt\"><span style=\"color: #333333\">Al igual que las redes neuronales en forma de c\u00f3digo inform\u00e1tico, el chip f\u00edsico de IBM imita las sinapsis que conectan las neuronas individuales en el cerebro. La fuerza de estas conexiones sin\u00e1pticas debe ajustarse para que la red aprenda. En un cerebro vivo, esto sucede en forma de conexiones que crecen o se marchitan con el tiempo. Eso es f\u00e1cil de reproducir en el software, pero hasta ahora<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #333333\"><b>, resultaba incre\u00edblemente dif\u00edcil replicarlo en formato f\u00edsico<\/b><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #333333\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 10pt\"><span style=\"color: #333333\">Los investigadores de IBM han demostrado las sinapsis microelectr\u00f3nicas en un <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-018-0180-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">trabajo de investigaci\u00f3n<\/a> <span style=\"color: #333333\">publicado en la revista <\/span><em><span style=\"color: #333333\">Nature<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #333333\">. Su enfoque se inspira en la neurociencia, ya que usa <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #333333\"><b>dos tipos de sinapsis: las de corto plazo para el c\u00e1lculo y las de largo plazo para la memoria<\/b><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #333333\">. Este m\u00e9todo \u00ababorda algunos problemas clave\u00bb, especialmente la baja precisi\u00f3n, que han obstaculizado los esfuerzos previos para construir redes neuronales artificiales en silicio, se\u00f1ala el investigador del Instituto Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnolog\u00eda (India) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nist.gov\/people\/michael-schneider\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #f90e1e\">Michael Schneider<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #333333\">, que est\u00e1 investigando hardware de ordenador inspirado en la neurolog\u00eda.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 10pt\"><span style=\"color: #333333\">Los investigadores probaron su red neuronal f\u00edsica mediante dos tareas simples de reconocimiento de im\u00e1genes: la escritura a mano y la clasificaci\u00f3n de im\u00e1genes en color. Las pruebas revelaron que el sistema era tan preciso como una red neuronal profunda basada en software a pesar de que <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #333333\"><b>consum\u00eda solo un 1 % de energ\u00eda.<\/b><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 10pt\"><span style=\"color: #333333\">El descubrimiento no solo es importante para la IA. Si se ampl\u00eda a la producci\u00f3n comercial, podr\u00eda reivindicar una de las grandes apuestas de IBM. Aunque la compa\u00f1\u00eda ya no vende chips de ordenador, lleva tiempo invirtiendo en proyectos dirigidos a reinventar el hardware del ordenador. Su esperanza <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.es\/s\/9457\/ibm-y-mit-se-alian-para-recuperar-el-trono-de-la-inteligencia-artificial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #f90e1e\">es que<\/span><\/a> <strong><span style=\"color: #333333\"><b>una nueva generaci\u00f3n de componentes microelectr\u00f3nicos ayuden a impulsar los pr\u00f3ximos grandes avances de la humanidad<\/b><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #333333\">. Este avance podr\u00eda ser un primer paso para conseguirlo, ya que aumentar\u00eda la eficacia del aprendizaje autom\u00e1tico y lograr\u00eda que la tecnolog\u00eda fuera m\u00e1s f\u00e1cil de incorporar en dispositivos peque\u00f1os como <\/span><em><span style=\"color: #333333\">smartphones<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #333333\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 10pt\"><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u00abAumentar la eficiencia energ\u00e9tica y la velocidad de entrenamiento en capas completamente conectadas por un factor de 100 es un avance por el que merece la pena esforzarse m\u00e1s\u00bb, afirma Schneider. Sin embargo, no todos est\u00e1n tan seguros. El investigador de la Universidad de Stanford (EE. UU.) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.stanford.edu\/group\/brainsinsilicon\/boahen.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #f90e1e\">Kwabena Boahen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #333333\">, que investiga arquitecturas computarizadas, dice que <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #333333\"><b>el trabajo le recuerda al bombo que hubo alrededor de los \u00abmemristores<\/b><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u00ab.
