Lighting the way to neuroscientific transformation

A satellite workshop recently organised by the EU-funded PANERIS project provided scientists with a unique opportunity to share knowledge on innovative imaging techniques and their potential impact on neuroscience. Titled ‘Frontiers of Light Microscopy’, the event took place on 28 November 2024 as part of the annual Lithuanian Neuroscience Association Conference in Vilnius.

Advancing neuroscience through microscopy

During the workshop, researchers from Lithuania and beyond discussed how cutting-edge advancements in light microscopy are transforming brain health studies. According to Urtė Neniškytė, a neuroscientist at Vilnius University and PANERIS coordinator, “Microscopy is not just about seeing – it’s about revealing the unseen.”

Key topics covered in the workshop included:

• Super-resolution microscopy for mapping brain cell interactions.
• Live-cell imaging techniques to study synaptic plasticity.
• Multimodal imaging to track molecular changes related to obesity and addiction.
• AI-powered microscopy for processing vast neuroscience datasets.

“Imaging tools are not just instruments but gateways to new dimensions of neuroscience,” added Neniškytė, emphasising their role in developing targeted therapies.

Strengthening research collaboration

PANERIS also held a 5-day training programme for 10 representatives from Lithuania, Poland, and Portugal at the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS), a Spanish project partner. The event, held from 11 to 15 November, aimed to strengthen research and innovation management capacities.
