Delhi Govt floats tender for 140 e-buses under cluster scheme

The new buses will feature GPS, panic buttons, CCTV cameras and are expected to begin plying on Delhi’s roads by mid-2022 if the bids are successfully carried out

As a move to cut down emissions in the national capital, the Delhi Transport Department floated tenders for 140 low-floor, air-conditioned electric buses on October 14. Apart from contributing to reducing vehicular pollution in Delhi, the move will also strengthen the bus fleet.

As per notice from the Transport Department, the tender for 140 e-buses has been issued under the Delhi Government’s cluster scheme. Earlier in October, the Department floated tenders for 190 low-floor, air-conditioned buses under the cluster scheme.

The Government of Delhi has initiated a move to promote environmentally, socially and financially sustainable public transport among the people in the capital and the surrounding areas of the National Captial Region (NCR). According to a senior transport department officer, more than 3000 CNG-propelled buses have been inducted into the fleet under the cluster scheme, however, the government is now focusing on adding more e-buses to further cut down vehicular pollution in the city.

The new buses will feature GPS, panic buttons, CCTV cameras and are expected to begin plying on Delhi’s roads by mid-2022 if the bids are successfully carried out.

Based on the population that the national capital caters to, the estimates suggest that Delhi requires at least 11,000 buses to fulfil the public transport needs for the people. For this, the Government of Delhi has been making recurring efforts to increase the number of buses. The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) had also floated tenders for induction of 300 e-buses recently that are expected to roll out from November 2021.
