Pamplona is awarded with the Sustainable City National Prize

The Sustainable City National Prize is celebrated every year by the Environmental Forum Foundation [Fundación Fórum Ambiental] with support from the Ministry of Environment

Pamplona has been the wining city of the XII Edition of Sustainable City Prizes (Premios Ciudad Sostenible) ,

a prize that is celebrated every year by the Environmental Forum Foundation with support of the Ministry of Environment and recognizes all those local municipalities and local governmental agencies who have conducted projects and actions promoting sustainability. Juan José Echeverría, Town Planning Housing, and Environment counselor, had the honor to receive the prize in Madrid, last Monday December 1st, which was delivered by Isabel García Tejerina, Minister of Agriculture, Food, and Environment.

The fist awarded has been the city of Pamplona, recognized as the most sustainable City, due to “ the exemplary job in sustainability that is been performed by the city government during the last years.” The jury panel alluded to the different tasks of the city in the development of sustainability such as waste management and reduction, the complete water cycle, transportation and combating climate change, traffic management, safety, energy savings and efficiency, green spaces and environmental education, and it emphasizes the success achieved with implemented measures and the work done.

In addition, the other awarded cities have been the Laguna Municipality obtaining a prize in the water cycle Management category, Ontinyent in the Environmental Education category, the Osana Regional Council  in the Energy Efficiency category and the Vallés Oriental Consortium of Waste Management. The jury panel was formed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Environment, the Valencian Regional Government, the Andalusian Regional Government, the Canary Island Regional Government, the Municipality of Madrid, the Municipality of Barcelona, the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) and the Municipality of Cartagena, winner of the last edition.

For a sustainable model

The Fundación Forum Ambiental (Environmental Forum Foundation), the award organizer, is a non-profit organization that seeks to create a platform of dialogue and collaboration between companies, regional governments and the rest of society, in order to jointly obtain and apply a more sustainable development model. The task of the foundation is based in three lines of activity: information and dissemination, project development and training support and research programs.

The goals of these activities are the integration of environmental culture into business culture, dissemination within society of compatibility between sustainable business development and protection of environmental quality and development and protection of a locally grown environmentally based economic activity sector
