Committed to promote and improve our living standard

Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije

As Mayor of Accra I am very proud with how Accra is being recognized as one of the leading African cities in its transformation towards a better city.

The City of Accra was nominated as one of five other cities with high scores in sanitation and environmental management by the UN Climate Change Conference in South Africa, held in 2012, and also received the IBM SMART CITY Award in 2011. Another achievement was Accra being cited as the forth out of the forty-six places, the New York Times recommended for business and tourist destination in 2013. The same year, Accra was declared as the African City with the highest growth prospect by global payments leader MasterCard.

Other notable international recognitions Accra has achieved under our leadership includes the selection of Accra as part of the 100 resilient cities pioneered by the Rockefeller Foundation, and recognition of Accra by the  Bloomberg Foundation Initiative for road safety.

I’m still concerning to develop Accra, invest in future of the youth, the communities in order to bring development and better the lives of the people. Some of our outlined achievements includes  ending the shift system of education in Accra, through the construction of the  millennium city schools, provision of a liquid waste treatment plant at East Legon to serve University of Ghana and its environs, on-going rehabilitation of the Mudor liquid waste treatment plant, pump stations and sewage lines, introduction of polluter pay principle and the distribution of 117,000 waste bins to households within its jurisdiction in collaboration with the Environmental Service Providers Association (ESPA) and capping of landfill sites.

We are creating all opportunities and other social intervention programs that will allow the youth to develop their potentials to the fullest.

Our government is committed to promote and improve our living standard. And I stand promising total economic transformation.

Dr. Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije
