Sustainability also plays a key role in FIWARE’s mission. “We need to ensure everything works efficiently and does not over-consume resources. Green software is something that’s being discussed around the world, and FIWARE is contributing to that conversation by developing solutions that not only serve communities but also reduce environmental impact,” Andrea noted, pointing to how FIWARE helps optimize energy usage in smart cities.

The role of data discovery and open-source benefits

Another key challenge highlighted during the Summit was making data spaces work. As Andrea mentioned, interoperability enables more efficient data exchange, but cities also need tools that help them uncover and utilize hidden or underused data. FIWARE’s approach to data discovery helps unlock the full potential of information that would otherwise remain siloed, enabling cities to address real-world problems with data-driven insights.

FIWARE’s open-source model encourages cities and organizations to share data rather than hoard it. By enabling open collaboration, FIWARE fosters innovation and allows public and private sectors to build better services for citizens. “Trust is more than a buzzword for us—it’s about creating real value through technology,” Andrea said, underscoring the importance of trust in this open-source ecosystem.

While FIWARE’s influence has become global, its solutions remain flexible enough to adapt to local ecosystems. Cities and regions can use FIWARE’s standardized data models but still customize them to meet their unique needs. This adaptability allows them to operate within a global framework while avoiding vendor lock-in, ensuring that innovation is driven by local context and challenges.
