10 Sustainability Solutions Redefine Cities - from AI to Carbon Capture

Leading Cities, the global nonprofit dedicated to advancing city resiliency and sustainability, in collaboration with QBE Insurance Group, is thrilled to unveil the top ten urban technology startups chosen as finalists of the QBE AcceliCITY Resilience Challenge. Now in its sixth year, this groundbreaking program has established itself as one of the world's largest initiatives of its kind, bridging the gap between innovative startups and urban centers. AcceliCITY alumni have already raised more than $1 Billion in funding, many of which have deployed their solutions to enhance the equity, resilience, and safety of cities worldwide.

The QBE AcceliCITY finalists are rewriting the rules of what’s possible in cities, proving that the answers to our most pressing urban challenges might come from the most unexpected corners.”

This year's finalists were selected from an impressive and record-breaking pool of over 740 startups from 70 different countries. The entrepreneurs leading these ventures are committed to addressing a wide range of urban challenges, including clean water, inclusive mapping, electric vehicle infrastructure, and more. The journey began with the selection of the Top 100 Resiliency Solutions, who participated in a business-to-government and capital acquisition-focused web-based curriculum, receiving invaluable one-on-one mentorship from global experts.

Now, the Top 10 Resiliency Solutions are gearing up for the QBE AcceliCITY Virtual Boot Camp where they will compete for a total of $100,000 in pilot project funding. The Top 10 will participate in a Final Pitch Event on October 11^th, presenting their solutions to a panel of distinguished judges from global powershouse organizations including the Clinton Foundation’s Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) and the World Economic Forum (WEF).

AcceliCITY's unique approach streamlines innovation for both startups and governments by reimagining the innovation and implementation cycles for Smart City solutions. The program connects startups' innovative solutions directly with business users and provides them with the necessary channels, training, and knowledge to successfully implement their technologies in cities.

About the Finalists

1. Agora World: Provides a no-code platform for creating and managing 3D digital twins for urban planning and development.
2. Airbuild: Integrates carbon capture, water filtration, and renewable energy generation into buildings to enhance sustainability.
3. Biostra: Converts organic waste into high-quality fertilizer in minutes, supporting sustainable agriculture and reducing environmental impact.
4. Gravity Water: Provides innovative rainwater harvesting systems that deliver safe water to schools and reduce groundwater extraction.
5. Green the Chain: Offers a procurement platform that simplifies sourcing and comparing sustainable products to meet ESG goals.
6. Reef Arches: Designs wave attenuation devices that protect coastlines and promote coastal resilience against sea-level rise.
7. Taro AI: Delivers AI-powered tree monitoring systems that improve urban forestry management and reduce infrastructure damage.
8. TranslateLive: Develops a real-time translation tool to bridge communication barriers for Limited English Proficiency (LEP) individuals in cities.
9. Washbox: Provides a mobile, eco-friendly tool wash system that recycles water, captures waste for easy disposal, and requires no plumbing, making it ideal for all construction trades on various job sites.
10. WEO: Creates accessible environmental analytics by harnessing the power of space data and AI.

In addition to the Smart Cities Track of the Resilience Challenge, the 2024 competition also features two auxiliary tracks, a Proptech Track seeking solutions to challenges at the intersection of sustainability and commercial property, and a Humanitarian Track aiming to redefine the way tech innovation empowers communities to adapt to climate-related impacts.

In the Proptech Track, funded by the QBE Insurance Group, includes four finalists – PACE AI, Faura, Extrasense, and Gravity Water. These four companies will be pitching to a judging panel made up of QBE’s property leaders in North America and International, as well as QBE Ventures. The winner of this track will receive $25,000 and business support from QBE.

In the Humanitarian Track, powered by Australian Red Cross Humanitech in collaboration with the Global Disaster Preparedness Center (GDPC), and supported by the American Red Cross and the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), three finalists have emerged WEO, inCitu, and Communiti Labs. The winner will receive access to cash prizes totaling $150,000 USD, a fully funded pilot in Australia collaborating with Australian Red Cross, and integration into a global network of practitioners and experts.
