The Smart City Business Institute (SCBI) and the Municipal Institute of IT of the Barcelona City Hall have signed an agreement to work together in the program “Smart Education”, a project whose goal is to bring the concept of Smart Cities and innovation to the students of Barcelona, from primary school to high school.
“Smart Education” will launch during the present schoolyear in five different schools around the city, featuring several activities and workshops for students. To build up the program, one of the 22 items of the “Smart City Barcelona” plan in which the SCBI has taken part, contents for all ages have been designed. The main goal is to foster the participation and interaction of students with the spirit of the Smart City, as well as to provide extra training in sustainability for the teachers.
“Our desire is to promote the idea of ‘Barcelona, a city for the people’: a place where new technologies are implemented to improve its people´s lives. Bringing this idea to the children is a great means to pave the way” stated Eduardo Martín, Head of Innovation at the Municipal Institute of IT.
The primary school students will learn about the concept of Smart Cities through the tale of ‘Onda’, as well as workshops and a mural of drawings made by them. The students at Joan Pelegrí School have been the first to take part in this activity. Students of Fourth Year will also work with an app, called “Little Hero Smart BCN”, a character who offers Smart challenges to them. The children in Sixth year will enjoy Smart Walks and an introduction to robotics, whereas high school students will take part in workshops at the Athenaeum.
