Smart City calls: URBAN MENUS seeks innovations that sustainably change the ecosystem city and enable a better life for all

The submitted projects and ideas should be related to one of the three focuses social affairs, environment, or economy – if possible, even in combination

"For us, a green wall is only innovative if it takes effect in the living space." The team behind the digital 3d-urban-vision-tool URBAN MENUS is looking for special game changers in two categories: smart spatial planning concepts and smart products and services. Not only "newcomers" are addressed explicitly, but also those who have been developing and applying solutions for years – but perhaps have not been very vocal about their ideas.

Smart City Chief Call
Creating spatial framework conditions for sustainable coexistence – this is what this call is all about: We are looking for location visions that have the potential to positively change the lives of everyone using the space. From the concept phase to the implemented project, all ideas from the field of urban planning are welcome. Invited to submit are mayors.

Smart Products & Services Call
Smart tools and services supporting smart coexistence are in demand. Technical innovations such as photovoltaics or vertical farming integrations are just as welcome as for example digital services to improve coexistence. Anyone who can present a development that is applicable in a real context can submit.

URBAN MENUS is about sustainable urban development. The submitted projects and ideas should be related to one of the three focuses social affairs, environment, or economy – if possible, even in combination. They should also contribute to one or more of the following social values: happiness, security, innovation, economic efficiency, or circularity. Possible topics are energy supply, greening, transport, densification, revitalization, resilience, diversity, social coexistence, intergenerational dialogue, mix of tradition & contemporary culture, settlement management, management of tourism flows, ...

Submission modalities
Each call, one showcase project is selected per month. Submissions (in German or English) for the next monthly presentation are possible for both calls until the end of the previous month. Interested parties from all over the world can apply. The next deadline is 2021-01-31! For more information and submission documents, see

Why taking part is worth it
All selected projects and tools will be presented on the URBAN MENUS Smart City Platform. There is also the possibility of an impact assessment, which analyses the impact of the innovation holistically – including based on the Sustainable Development Goals – as well as further consulting. In addition, the participants can contribute their ideas to the development of the URBAN MENUS Smart City Platform. Through this platform, innovations will be disseminated in the future – in a completely new way, integrated into the city ambience.

An example project: the campus of the Vienna University of Economics and Business
An example is e.g., the master planning for the new campus of the Vienna University of Economics and Business, which has been developed by the call initiators: Instead of one large building, a multifunctional, green area for studying and living was created. A space that is not only interesting for students, but also for many others who like to stay at a unique hub for education, business, and social affairs. In addition, the campus is considered to be the first climate-neutral university campus in Austria.

Without borders
The potential of a smart world can only be exploited if people come together with their good ideas. These people should be reached by the calls!
