Interviews
Jason Shuster on How the Metaverse is Shaping Smarter, More Connected Cities at Smart City Expo Barcelona
BizzTech’s Co-Founder & COO shares his vision on metaverse innovation, community engagement, and the future of urban resilience during Smart City Expo World Congress 2024 in Barcelona
In today’s rapidly evolving landscape, cities are embracing cutting-edge technology to become smarter, more efficient, and more connected than ever before. One of the most transformative technologies making waves in this space is the metaverse—a concept that goes beyond traditional digital representations to create fully immersive, interactive environments.
During the Smart City Expo World Congress 2024 in Barcelona, we had the pleasure of speaking with Jason Shuster, Co-Founder and COO of BizzTech, a pioneering company at the forefront of metaverse innovation for smart cities. Jason shared insights on how BizzTech’s platform is pushing the boundaries of what’s possible by integrating social, cultural, and sustainability goals within the metaverse. In this interview, he explores the distinctions between digital twins and metaverse ecosystems, the ways in which BizzTech is enhancing community engagement, and his vision for the future of urban development through immersive technology.
Join us as we dive into the future of smart cities with Jason Shuster and uncover how BizzTech is helping shape the cities of tomorrow.
TSCJ.- Thank you for joining us today at the Smart City Expo. I’m thrilled to welcome Jason Shuster, Co-Founder and COO of BizzTech, a leader in metaverse innovation that’s paving the way for smart and sustainable urban environments. Welcome, Jason!
JS.- Thank you very much, Esther. I'm excited to be here.
TSCJ.- As BizzTech steps into the smart city sector, what unique advantages do you believe the metaverse brings to urban development? And how does this differ from traditional digital twin technology?
JS.- Great question. The primary difference between a metaverse and a digital twin lies in versatility. A digital twin can be part of a metaverse, but a metaverse goes beyond just replicating physical infrastructure—it offers immersive social, cultural, educational, and even tourism experiences. A digital twin is often focused on mirroring a specific physical asset or environment, while a metaverse can encompass multiple elements, creating an entire virtual ecosystem that’s interactive and multifunctional.
TSCJ.- Fascinating! How does BizzTech’s metaverse platform integrate social and sustainability goals? Could you share how this could enhance community engagement and urban resilience?
JS.- Absolutely. A project we're working on in Montgomery, Alabama, is a great example. Next year marks the 60th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery Civil Rights March, a historic moment for civil rights in the U.S. The city is currently engaged in a smart city upgrade, enhancing physical infrastructure to boost efficiency and modernize areas that have seen less development since the civil rights era. Our work involves creating a digital twin of the march’s route, enabling people worldwide to participate in a virtual march alongside those physically present. This project not only connects Montgomery’s history to a global audience but also provides an immersive, educational experience powered by AI.
In terms of sustainability, our platform offers the efficiency advantages of traditional digital twins—optimizing energy use, managing water systems, and more. But with the additional layer of visualization and interaction in the metaverse, these systems become even more accessible and usable for cities and citizens alike.
TSCJ.- It’s exciting to see such a blend of history, community, and sustainability. What are your key objectives for this year’s Smart City Expo? How do you see these goals advancing BizzTech’s role in the smart city landscape?
JS.- Two weeks ago, we hosted a small event where we brought together some of the industry’s top thought leaders, including you, Esther—it was a fantastic experience! This week at the Expo, our goal is to deepen those initial discussions, identify impactful projects, and explore new partnership opportunities. We’re also keen to see how BizzTech fits among other innovations showcased here, learning from others and refining our role in this ecosystem.
Ultimately, we aim to solidify relationships and find opportunities that can only emerge in this unique, global setting. There’s no substitute for the kind of networking that happens here.
The future of our cities just got a lot more exciting, thanks to visionaries like Jason Shuster and the team at BizzTech. By pushing beyond traditional boundaries, they’re showing us how the metaverse can redefine urban life—blending culture, sustainability, and technology into one immersive experience. As BizzTech continues to expand, we’re eager to see how their innovations will shape cities worldwide, connecting communities in ways we once only dreamed possible. Thank you, Jason, for giving us a glimpse into this thrilling urban evolution!
