Rio de Janeiro - Smart Mobility

Rio de Janeiro

I have been following smart cities’ projects for almost one decade. Just in 2015, I visited personally 25 vibrant projects around the world. 2016 will not be different, I have already 15 speeches scheduled in world-class congresses, so it will be definitely a great opportunity to be following the new trends and sharing everything with you.

In my first video I will bring you to Rio de Janeiro, my home town. Rio de Janeiro is ranked as the 5th Latin-American Smart City and it took the first place in the last national ranking.

Bus Rapid Transit - BRT Rio de Janeiro
Public Transportation is a big challenge for any city. The BRT project was created in Brazil in 1974. It has already been replicated in 189 cities around the world and serves more than 31 million passengers per day.

We visited the project in Rio, a huge investment of more than USD 2,7 billion . It has a total extension of 157 km and by 2017 it will be serving 60 million people per month.

We highlight below the four main points of the system:

1. Articulated buses that can carry much more passengers than a normal bus:

autobus

2. Trunk-feeder system 100% segregated from general traffic:

general traffic

3. Independent Stations, the BRT stations offer better comfort conditions to users, within the accessibility standards and pleasant temperature and are fully sustainable.

4. Operational Contro Center is the headquarters of the operation for all BRT corridors planned for the city. It is a sustainable facility with High Environmental Certification

Urban mobility solutions are always related to public investments. The amazing competitive advantage of BRT systems is the relation between the investment budget versus the passenger load factor. If compared to other systems like Light Rail, Trains or Metro, it proves to be very effective. BRT costs eight times less than a train system and can be implemented much faster.
